Ingredients
1 1/2 lbs ground beef
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon onion powder
Salt and pepper, to taste
2 cups milk, divided
1/4 cup all-purpose flour
4-5 medium russet potatoes, thinly sliced
1 medium onion, thinly sliced
1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
Optional Garnish:
Chopped parsley
Sour cream
Green onions
Instructions
1. Preheat the Oven
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with butter or cooking spray.
2. Cook the Ground Beef
In a large skillet, cook the ground beef over medium heat until browned and cooked through. Drain any excess fat.
Season the beef with garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Set aside.
3. Make the Cheese Sauce
In a medium saucepan, whisk together 1 1/2 cups of milk and the flour until smooth.
Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture thickens and comes to a gentle boil.
Remove from heat and stir in the shredded cheddar cheese until melted and smooth.
4. Assemble the Casserole
Layer half of the sliced potatoes in the bottom of the prepared baking dish.
Top with half of the cooked ground beef and half of the sliced onions.
Pour half of the cheese sauce over the layers.
Repeat with the remaining potatoes, ground beef, onions, and cheese sauce.
5. Add the Final Touch
Pour the remaining 1/2 cup of milk over the top of the casserole.
6. Bake to Perfection
Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake for 45 minutes.
Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender and the top is golden brown.
7. Serve and Enjoy
Let the casserole cool for 5-10 minutes before serving. Garnish with chopped parsley, sour cream, or green onions, if desired.
